The School Day

School day begins at 8:50 and teachers will close classroom doors at 8:55 Any children arriving after this time will have to enter  the school via the main office and be signed in late.

Contacting your class teacher:

Your class teacher will be available to answer any queries or questions as the children are dropped off  in the morning or picked up in the evening, and should be the first point of contact with parent.

Physical Education

In the Autumn term, Year 5 will be going swimming as part of their PE curriculum. Swimming lessons will take place at Leyton Leisure Lagoon on Monday afternoons. Please make sure children have the right swimwear otherwise they will not be able to participate. This includes a swimming hat.

Behaviour

Behaviour and learning is based around the five core values, which we expect the children to live up to.

  • Respect

  • Aspiration

  • Honesty

  • Kindness

  • Responsibility

Rewards

In Y5, we award Bazooka points to reward and promote good  behaviour. At the end of each term, the children with the most Bazooka points will go on a special trip, such as to the cinema, with a teacher.  Those who don’t go on the trip get other rewards based in school.

Sanctions

If a pupil fails to follow one of the classroom rules, he or she moves on to Step 1, which is a warning.

If the disruptive behaviour continues, the pupil moves on to Step 2, resulting in a period of time out in the class.

Then, they move on to Step 3, which involves time out in a different class.

If a pupil moves on to Step 4, the behaviour incident will be recorded electronically. In addition, parents will be notified and the pupil will receive a consequence for the behaviour, for example loss of playtime.

Topics

In the Autumn term, we will be learning about the early invaders and settlers to the British Isles, mainly the Saxons and Vikings. We will be finding out what happened when they invaded Britain and where they settled. We’ll also be looking at their culture and beliefs and what everyday life was like during this early period in history

In the Spring term, we turn our attentions to outer Space. In Science lessons, we will be learning about the Sun, Earth and Moon as well as other planets in the solar system, while the focus in topic lessons will be more about the history of space travel. Children will also have the opportunity to design their own spacecraft.

In the Summer term, we focus on the local area, using our history skills to find out how Walthamstow and Leyton have changed. In geography we will be learning what it is like to live in these areas of London and how they compare to other towns and cities in this country and around the world. This topic involves lots of field trips!

Literacy, Art, DT, Music, History and Geography will all be taught through these topics

Educational visits

We have planned a visit to the Science Museum at the end of November as part of the science topic on ‘materials’. This will involve lots of ‘hands on’ workshops and practical activities.

In the Spring Term we are planning to visit the Royal Observatory in Greenwich  to further our understanding of ‘Space’.

Exact details of these trips and any potential costs will be given to parents nearer the time.

Homework

In Year 5 we expect children to complete homework tasks each evening, lasting approximately 30 minutes. These will be based on children’s learning in Literacy, Numeracy and topic lessons.

Children can also access additional maths homework online through MyMaths.

There is an expectation that children do 15-20 minutes reading each evening and record comments in a home reading diary. Each child also has access to a range of ebooks on Bug Club which they can also read.

Children have weekly spellings and times tables to learn and they are tested each week on a Friday.
